The Complex Interplay between Keloids and T Cells: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract
Keloids, a type of fibroproliferative disorder, are characterized by an overgrowth of scar tissue beyond the original wound margins following skin injury. Recent studies have highlighted the pivotal role of T cells, particularly CD4+ T cells, in the pathogenesis of keloids. These cells are found to be significantly increased in keloid lesions and are believed to contribute to excessive collagen production by fibroblasts through the release of various cytokines. Furthermore, the imbalance between Th1 and Th2 cells, subsets of CD4+ T cells, has been implicated in keloid formation. This review delves into the current understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, discusses recent advancements in the field, and explores potential therapeutic strategies targeting T cell-mediated immune responses for keloid treatment. This review article provides a comprehensive examination of the intricate relationship between keloids and T cells. The aim is to stimulate further research in this area to improve patient outcomes and develop more effective treatments for this challenging dermatological condition.
